Focusing Your Search Words -- Focus can help you find alternate words to search on or ways to express your search criteria. When you enter search criteria and click Search, SurfWax automatically determines if FocusWords exist for the words in your criteria. If FocusWords exist, they are listed in the blue bar with the prompt "Focus". As an alternative, you can focus directly (without first clicking Search), by entering a word or words you want to focus on, and clicking the blue Focus button(under the Search list box).
  • Enter a word(s) and click Focus -- related FocusWords will be listed in the lower half of the browser window.
  • Review the list of Focuswords -- this is the key step, since the better you think through the words for your search, the more focused it will be. FocusWords cover noun topics and concepts, but not most adjectives or adverbs.
  • FocusWords are grouped by definition. If you have Definitions On under Preferences, a definition appears for each group of words; with IE, you can use the buttons to contract (hide) or to expand (show) the words for a definition.
  • For any word in the list, click the button following the word to focus that word.
  • Click on the word(s) itself e.g., "tiger" or "big_cat" to move it to the Search criteria box.
  • Modify or add word(s) until your criteria is just right, and then click Search for some of the best surfing on the Internet.

Step 1.

  • Think about what you want to search on then enter a single word, e.g., "tiger" or multiple words that relate to a single concept or topic, e.g., "tiger lily".
  • Words can be upper or lower case; put a space between words.
  • Click Focus to get your FocusWords.
  • If you click on "Focus" and no words appear, empty your browser's cache (Under Preferences, Advanced), and then click Refresh and re-enter your word.

Step 2.

  • Reviewing the Focuswords is where you get the benefit of SurfWax -- carefully review the FocusWords and select those that better define your search.
  • Click on the underlined word(s), e.g., "big_cat" -- this Selects and moves the word(s) to the Search criteria list.

Step 3.

  • The selected word(s) appear in the Search list. Multi-word sets are placed in quotes.
  • If you want to add more words to the Search list, e.g., "tigress" -- Repeat Step 2 -- this will help focus your search. The words you select will be added to the Search list.
  • Hint: Use the Back and Forward buttons on your browser to go back and forth between FocusWords lists you have created. You can select word(s) from any of these frames to accumulate and compose SurfWax in your Search list.

Step 4.

  • Click Search to see the Titles that match your search criteria. These titles are a combination from the top search engines (SurfWax does a de-duplicated "merged meta-search").
  • Click Clear to clear the Search list window to start over again.

When you click Search...

Titles matching your search appear alphabetically in a frame to the left.
