Composing your Search criteria
You can enter any word(s) into the Search list. You can also phrase your search criteria in the form a question (e.g., Where are the 2004 Olympics being held?). When you click Search, SurfWax does a "meta-search" across multiple search sources/engines, each of which has its own rules for criteria. For your ease of use, SurfWax automatically consolidates and simplifies these varied rules as follows:
  • For best results, use + - " as described below to help narrow the results you get.
  • SurfWax is not case sensitive -- for example Tom Jones, tom jones, and tom jONEs return the same results
  • Use the Results pop-up to control how many titles are returned to you. The highest ranked titles are returned. For example, if you select 50 from the pop-up as the number of Results you want, SurfWax will select the top 50, most highly ranked titles (relative to what you are searching on) from across the engines used, and then sort and display these titles for you.
  • Treat proper names and words that go together like phrases (use quotes) -- for example, "Abraham Lincoln" or "car auction". Tip: Single words do not need quotes, e.g., +"Jones" is the same as +Jones.
  • If a word must be in the page, put a + right before the word -- for example, +pie apple means the word "pie" must be in the web page. This also applies to phrases -- for example, +"admit weekend" +stanford would find just those web pages that include both "admit weekend" and "stanford". If you were looking for just those web pages that had special sales on Beanie Babies, you could enter the following criteria: +"special sale" +"beanie babies".
  • If you want to exclude a page with a certain word, put a - right before the word -- for example, +pie apple -chocolate means that all pages with the word "chocolate" will be skipped.
  • Enter exact phrases by putting quotes around them -- for example, "Star Spangled Banner" would return only pages with that exact phrase. Without the quotes, web pages would be found that have the words Star Spangled Banner, but not necessarily in that sequence -- for example, without quotes, a page with the sentence "the astronauts put a spangled banner on the newly discovered star" would be returned.
  • Words in your criteria list without a + or - cause pages with those words to be ranked higher -- for example, pages with the words peach or apple would be ranked higher if you entered +pie apple peach -chocolate.
  • You do not need to use AND between words - "and" is implied between two or more words -- for example: tom jones is the same as tom AND jones.
  • The maximum length of all the words in your criteria list is limited to 120 characters.

Editing your criteria

  • Compose and edit your search words in the Search list to create your desired search criteria.
  • Click Search to see the Titles that match your search criteria. These titles are a combination from the top search engines (SurfWax does a de-duplicated "merged meta-search").
